Predictive Dialers

How Are They Different?

Predictive dialing utilizes sophisticated call delivery and queuing algorithms to effectively launch more calls than there are actual agents to handle them. Predictive dialing “counts” on the fact that there will be a statistical certainty that a number of “dials” will not result in a contact.

Predictive dialers automate the entire process associated with placing calls. Agents generally have little, if any, control over the pace of the calls.

A predictive dialer’s main benefit is simple—the system automatically screens out all calls placed to phone numbers which result in a no answers, busy signal, and in some cases, answering machine—delivering calls to agents ONLY when a live person answers the phone.

Power dialing, on the other hand, is a one-to-one scenario. It actively launches only as many calls as there are agents available to handle them. And, power dialing solutions typically put the agent in control—allowing each individual to set his/her own pace.

Power dialing systems deliver all calls to agents. They makes no distinction between no answer, busy, answering machine, etc.—allowing the agent to make that distinction, tally the call appropriately, and request another dialed call. This is the primary difference between the two types of technology.

Why is There a Need for Power Dialing?

Predictive dialing is not a panacea for all outbound calling issues. While on the surface, it appears to be an ideal solution, it is has its share of drawbacks.

Predictive dialing solutions are generally very expensive and only make economic sense when there are large numbers of calls to make. So, predictive dialing is cost prohibitive for smaller businesses and/or departments of larger companies where the call volume does not support it.

Predictive dialers only connect agents with “live” called parties. And, they are delivered immediately with little or no warning to the receiving agent. So, calls are delivered to largely unprepared agents who do not usually have time to learn anything about the called party prior to call delivery—even if a screen pop of some type is provided. Often times, this aspect of predictive dialing results in a lower quality contact.

Because of the “predictive” nature of predictive dialing, predictive dialers sometimes “get ahead” of agents ability to handle calls. Calls are sometimes placed and answered by called parties before there is an agent available to handle the call. When this happens, called parties answer the call only to receive several seconds of dead air before a “live” person is added to the call.

But, perhaps, one of the largest problems with predictive dialing has nothing to do with the technology. It has to do with legislation. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently amended the legislation that deals with automated outbound marketing. In an attempt to severely limit the use of predictive dialers—due in large part to the incredible number of abandoned calls and “hang ups”—the Commission placed restrictions on calls to residential customers, with large fines for failure to comply, on the number of abandoned calls allowed, length of time a call must ring before classifying the call as a “no answer”, and call handling rules when the “gets ahead” of agent availability. It remains to be seen what impact this will have on the telemarketing industry. However, first indications are that it will change ROI calculations and render smaller systems financially untenable.

While power dialing does not automate the entire dialing process, it automates a substantial portion of the process—the physical list management and dialing. Power dialing still provides significant productivity increases—up to 30% improvement—over simple manual dialing.

So, power dialing, while not as efficient as predictive dialing, still provides a significant increase in productivity. And, it does so at a fraction of the cost of predictive dialing—generating a very solid ROI—even for small outbound dialing operations.

Power dialers never “get ahead”—resulting in no called party side abandons and elimination of the annoyance factor and negative feelings toward the business making those calls that is typically associated with those abandoned calls.

Power dialing puts the agent/caller in control of the process—resulting in higher quality calls and much higher morale.

When to Choose Power Dialing Over Predictive Dialing

Power dialing is an ideal solution over predictive dialing when:

·        Call quality is more important than call quantity—proactive customer nurturing calls, calls made to senior managers—any calls made by companies whose philosophy is rooted in superb customer care

·        There is a need to improve and track outbound call productivity, but call loads cannot justify the cost (or generate an adequate return) of a predictive dialing solution, or where budgets will not permit a large purchase or expense

·        Primary outbound calling is business to business or business to a relatively few number of residential customers

Why Power Dialers Are Immune From New FTC Telemarketing Laws

Because power dialers are not “technically” considered automated dialing solutions, they are immune from the FTC’s new automated telemarketing rulings and amendments.
